Gaping sinkhole causes traffic chaos for tired community battered by natural disasters
A Florida family was forced to evacuate their home after a gaping sinkhole opened up in their front yard in Polk County without warning.
Neighbor Sharon Stein told local media that she alerted the family to the growing sinkhole at 8 a.m. Saturday.
“I walked across the street with my dog and when I came down the street I saw something was wrong there and I went and investigated. Apparently, it had just happened because the neighbor had come by at 7:30 in the morning, and he didn’t see anything wrong,” Stein told ABC Action News.
More than 72 hours later, the ground continues to give way.
Officials estimate it to be about 4.5 meters wide and between 21 and 24 meters deep.
There is no timetable for when crews will begin filling the hole, as it is still very active.
