Stephen Rue appointed new chief executive
Optus has appointed Stephen Rew, who currently runs the National Broadband Network, as its new chief executive.
Optus chairman Paul O’Sullivan said the telco would benefit from Rue’s expertise in building Australia’s “digital backbone”.
“We are extremely pleased to have someone of his caliber to lead the next chapter at Optus. His experience in creating Australia’s digital backbone will serve us well as we revitalize Optus as Australia’s leading competitive telecommunications brand,” Sullivan said.
“We expect Stephen’s operational and financial background to significantly raise service standards for the benefit of our clients.”
Ryu said his job will focus on looking after Optus’ customers, people and business.
“I look forward to accelerating the transformation at Optus so that Australians continue to have the choice of a strong alternative telecommunications provider and the country as a whole can harness the power of digital connectivity to drive economic participation and social inclusion,” he said.
The announcement of the new chief executive came as Optus’ owner – Singaporean telco Singtel – said it had rolled out a new management model.
The structure will be more decentralized to “empower” its business, Singtel management said.
“In today’s uncertain economic environment, businesses need greater independence and flexibility to better navigate the market and we believe the new governance model will set Optus up for success and help Optus rebuild and cemented its position as a leading player in the Australian telecommunications market,” said Singtel CEO Yuen Kuan Moon.
